Degaussing an Electric Motor Shaft
Wilbur Life LLC can perform degaussing services of your equipment on-site with a portable degausser. This can include rotors, shafts, casings, endbells, bearing brackets or other components. If your equipment has issues such as high shaft voltages, sleeve or anti-friction bearing electrical frosting or pitting, there is a chance the shaft or other components are magnetized. Gauss levels should not exceed 2 gauss at shaft journals and bearing locations. If higher levels exist, localized Eddy currents can develop and cause bearing damage even if the bearing is insulated. Induction motor performance can also be changed if the shaft has a high level of magnetism. Degaussing the shaft can eliminate localized Eddy currents and return the rotor flux pattern to normal.
